Hi wvanderclock,
Well, it sounds like you've checked a lot of the right things. Losing audio after updating to SP2 is a known issue from Microsoft. Here is an HP document that mentions it and links to the MS arctile on it: Sound Problems After Installing a Vista Service Pack
Also, here are a couple other things to try. Install an audio driver update for your PC: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloa
If that doesn't work, try running System Restore to return your PC to a time before you installed SP2.
Let us know how it goes.

Note this wizard may be in English only; however, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

Well, after exhausting every lead I could get and spending hours online with HP and then on the phone the only option left was to rebuild the machine. I'm ticked that I couldn't resolve it without this step but I was also running out of time.
So I restored the original image from disk and then carefully did all of the updates one at a time. The machine is now fully updated including SP2 and has all of my required software installed. It's running great and I still have sound. I've even resolved the sleep problem (it wouldn't sleep) so I'm a happy camper again. Now if Fiorefox would just support a 64 bit version...
