I love my IQ846 purchased in August but when Vista SP2 was applied, I lost all my audio. I've uninstalled and installed all of the audio and video drivers but still no sound.  The speaker in the notification tray has a red circle with an X and says "no audio device is installed" when I click on open volume mixer. I have no yellow in Device Manager and all of the audio device drivers claim to be working. HELP! I'm fairly sure that if I reload the OS (Vista Home Premium 64) it will work but I've put an awful lot of work into getting my software where it is. And of course my HP Mediasmart WHS didn't arrive and back up my system until after the SP2 update. There must be a way to get my sound back without going back to square 1.

Re: No Sound

Hi wvanderclock,

Well, it sounds like you've checked a lot of the right things. Losing audio after updating to SP2 is a known issue from Microsoft. Here is an HP document that mentions it and links to the MS arctile on it:  Sound Problems After Installing a Vista Service Pack

Also, here are a couple other things to try. Install an audio driver update for your PC: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-71684-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...

If that doesn't work, try running System Restore to return your PC to a time before you installed SP2.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: No Sound

To fix these problems automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Click Run in the File Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.

Fix this problem
Microsoft Fix it 50131

Note this wizard may be in English only; however, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

Re: No Sound

Well, after exhausting every lead I could get and spending hours online with HP and then on the phone the only option left was to rebuild the machine. I'm ticked that I couldn't resolve it without this step but I was also running out of time.

So I restored the original image from disk and then carefully did all of the updates one at a time. The machine is now fully updated including SP2 and has all of my required software installed. It's running great and I still have sound. I've even resolved the sleep problem (it wouldn't sleep) so I'm a happy camper again. Now if Fiorefox would just support a 64 bit version...
