I purchased this computer about a month ago, and for some reason, the sound just stops working after it has been powered on for a couple of hours. When I restart it though, all is okay. It doesn't matter if it's CDs, You Tube, or just basic system sounds . . . all sound gets cut off after it has been running for a few hours.
I've noticed that this seems to happen either after the screen saver has run, or after it has gone into sleep mode, or after the antivirus (Kaspersky) has updated. Is there a possibility that one of these programs is overriding the sound card? Like I said, the sound all works fine after the system is powered up, so I don't think the card itself is faulty.
What are your thoughts?

It's definitely not the sound card.
Try re-installing your audio driver.

You can confirm your suspicions by checking to see if the Windows Audio Service is enabled, click Start type services and then double-click the Windows Audio service. If it is disabled or not running - something is turning it off and not turning it back on again. You can set it to Automatic in the same services properties window.
Other things that the folks here will need to know if the problem still happens is how are you connected? S/PDif? HDMI? 5.1 ?
Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

After doing some more testing, it definitely appears to knock the sound out after the sleep mode has taken place.
When I go to the Windows Audio function on the settings panel, it remains set on "automatic", even when I'm not hearing any sound. The only solution at this time is still to restart the computer, at which time all sound returns to normal.
This is the first time I've had a computer with the speakers in the monitor. Very odd indeed. Maybe I should just set the monitor to never go to sleep mode, but keep the sleep mode on the tower.

Sleep mode can definitely be an issue....I don't use it either because it's caused problems in the past for me, so now I'm skeptical of it ![]()

Thank you for your responses. Still struggling with the sound, so I just decided to turn the sleep mode off . . . and the sound problem was instantly solved.
Oddly enough, the first HP that I bought also had sleep problems, but that computer lasted 9 years, so I didn't mind too much. ![]()
