I have a Compaq Presario CQ61 laptop. Because of some malfunctions I decided to make recovery discs from recovery D: and format my harddrive C:.
This was working perfectly fine through all 3 cd's, but once the reinstallation process is about to start I get this Error 1002 and the process is cancelled. So now I have a computer that is not usable.
What is this error and how do I fix it? How can I finish my recovery without this happening?
Edit: The guarantee on my laptop is no longer running, so HP wants a big fee to even let me ask them one question. Not sure if I wanna pay because Im under the impression that this issue can not be solved by telephone. Ive read other posts talking about a DMI issue and how you should contact HP since this is a production flaw or something. But how do I contact them when the guarantee is expired? They wont talk to me unless I pay.

Hi,
What operating system are you trying to reinstall (ie Windows Vista 32bit)?
Shutdown the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.
It may be worth seeing if you can boot from the Recovery Partition as follows. Remove any discs from the DVD drive. Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f11 as soon as you press the power button to see if this will launch Recovery Manager and let you reinstall the OS this way.

Thank you.
I am using Windows Vista, yes.
Ran the memory test 2 days ago and harddrive test today as suggested, no errors.
I removed the dvd and pressed f11 and chose to do a recovery, but the same error 1002 pops up as before.
So Im pretty much still stuck, unfortunately.

Hi,
It may be worth trying the following procedure to see if this will 'repair' the new installation and allow Vista to boot.
This process will allow you to make a Vista Repair Disc. This is not an installation disc but will allow you to use the Vista Recovery Console that is available on retail versions of Vista.
On another PC, download the file on the link below. Make sure you download the correct version - if you're not sure, try the 32bit version first.
This is a zipped file. If you don't have an extraction utility installed, download and install 7-Zip, when installed, right click the zipped folder, select Extract Files and then click Ok. You should now see another folder containing the ISO file.
You will need software to burn the ISO to a CD. If you don't have this type on software installed, download and install ImgBurn and use this to burn the ISO to a CD.
Once you have created the Vista Repair Disc, follow the guide on the link below to see if this will repair your new installation - you may need to run this several times.

Ok so I followed every step, dowloading and using the programs listed.
But you say "repair the new installation", well atm there is nothing much installed at all on the pc I guess.. (on the c: partition at least)
But anyhow, this is what happens.
I get to figure 3, and choose "Repair your computer". But in my case the windows repair system does not find any Windows vista installations, the list is blank. (There is an option "Load drivers", but I dont know how that works)
I also tried to click the option "Windows complete pc restore", but I'm prompted with a message saying that "A valid backup location could not be found," and that I should insert the last backup disk or attach the backup harddisk. (Why does it say "attach"? My d: recovery partition is not an external harddrive...) I tried to insert both the first and the last recovery cds with no luck. If I move on from there by clicking "restore from a different backup" I can "select the location of the backup", and then choose to "install a driver". Can I do anything from that screen, or are those options useless in my case?
I really appreciate the help, and I try really hard to follow the advice given. I have visited the support department in the shop where I got the pc, but he was slightly puzzled as well, suggesting maybe I order new backup disks.

Hi,
Those other options you mention will not apply in this case. It may solve the problem by ordering a replacement set of Recovery Discs, but I'm definetely not certain that it will.
When you try to to re-load the operating system from your Recovery DVDs, am I correct in thinking that the process goes as far as loading the files from all 3 discs?
What exactly happens next?
Do you have any other devices connected to the notebook when try to recover the OS ( like a memory card, USB stick or an external mouse/keyboard )?

Hey,
Hm, thats what I thought. I figured maybe Id try to order new disks to make sure its not a software problem. If its a hardware problem my guarantee from the shop might cover the costly repairs.
What happens during the process is that "formatting the windows partition of the harddisk" works fine through all three disks, but when, on disk three we are supposed to move on to "reinstalling the original content" I get the error 1002 and the installation ends without succeeding.
Nothing but the powercable is connected as far as I can tell, so I really am quite confused.

Hi,
I would try wiping the Hard Drive first and then reinstalling the Operating System as this can sometimes resolve this error - it's a bit like mimicking the situation where a new Hard Drive has been installed.
On another PC, download and install Killdisk on the link below - ( this application will write zeros to the entire drive ).
http://software.lsoft.net/KillDiskSuiteFree-Setup.
Download and install ImgBurn on the link below.
http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-10847
Go to the Kill Disk application you have installed in All Programs, open the main folder, then select Bootable Disk creators and from that select Bootable DOS CD Creator which will burn the bootable ISO to a blank CD.
During the next process do not worry about any warnings as your Recovery DVDs will reformat the HDD.
Insert this CD in to your notebook that is unable to load Operating System properly. Shut the notebook down, then start it again to boot from the Killdisk CD and follow the on screen instructions for Kill Disk.
A brief description of the process is here Killdisk.
Use this to wipe the whole of the Hard Drive ( f10 ) - ( make sure you include all partitions and then start the process - this may take a couple of hours! ).
When the process is complete, remove the Killdisk CD,insert the your first HP Recovery Disc and then hold down the power button until the notebook shuts down Then restart the notebook to try the installation again.

Allright I'll run the killdisk tonight and try recovery tomorrow.
I deleted everything from the first harddrive and the recovery partition is being deleted now. Still there are two titles left called "Allocated", should they be deleted too? Do they belong to the harddisks? (I have not used killdisk before so Im not sure of these things)

Hi,
Yes, you want to erase everything so you can start the Recovery Disc installation on a completely clean Hard Drive.
