Re: HP OS Recovery Disc-Hp Recovery Manager

[ Edited ]

Hey was looking through here and I figured this was the best place toa sk this question.  Ok so I got my recovery discs, and my hard drive died, easy enough fix I replaced the harddrive and redid the recoevery disc.  My computer is having two frustrating problems at the moment, first up is that my computer got to the initial set up which is windows running with the HP blue screen across the front.  And it has been doing that for close to 8 hours now.

The second problem is that my computer seems to not be doing enough to stop the screen saver, and with that sleep mode.  Is there anyway I can get sleep mode to turn off, and on top of that is the recovery supposed to take almost 12 hours?  I hate asking this because I feel like I should be able to do this without any help it's just getting frustrating that I have to sit with my computer to stop it from going to sleep whille it does what ever the hp program is having it do.

For something specific it seems that the set up program started installing something but got stuck at 98%, the header to the item I can find is 01NAv3PrA2.  Any information on how to fix this problem or set up the factory settings correctly would be apriciated.

Re: HP OS Recovery Disc-Hp Recovery Manager

I am far from being an "expert" of all things HP... but

it bears mentioning that the word "recovery manager" is synonimous with (insert expeltive of your choice here) for a lot of HP customers.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-systems-and/RECOVERY-MANAGER/td-p/411379

I found out the hard way, and I am not alone.  Omission of the real pitfalls of the so-called utility, and touting its virtues in this sticky...  is total (insert expletive here)

Shame on you HP!

@Fresco

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems using HP Recovery Manager. I  also am no "expert' on all things HP.That would be quite an accomplishment even for HP employees, which I am not.

This is a peer to peer forum where HP owners try to assist other owners.I have the 'expert' icon simply from the ranking system which rates members on their time and efforts spent helping others. I created this 'sticky' as a quick way for members to find basic info required for burning a Recovery Disk set and using HP Recovery since the question has come up so frequently here.

While many HP employees do participate here trying to help in their free time, the forum is not an official venue to contact HP.

I have no problem using Recovery Manager... I used it EXACTLY the way the manufacturer instructed me to.  It is not human error, its the utility you are recommending to everyone to use that is an EPIC FAIL!!!

Recovery Manager does not do what it says its supposed to be doing (its designed to protect us during a catastrophic disaster) ...there is a HUGE flaw with it... and its not just me... and this is not news to anyone with a passing acquaintance with any issues related to so-called 'recovery' manager.  What good is it-- when the data its designed to protect and "recover" is lost/inaccessible forever?   Seriously!

I would NEVER have trusted it to protect my data, if I knew at the time it was such an epic fail.  The known issue was not addressed by the manufacturers, the designers, no patch, no warnings, no recalls, no nothing... Updates happen all the time, they happen instantly... why wasn't that addressed the second thousands of loyal customers were losing their data due to the major known flaw?

This was not news to anyone in a position of authority months and months and months before I blindly walked off that cliff with a big stupid grin on my face.  Your post count makes it clear this is not news to you... yet I saw NO mention of the fact folks keep walking off that cliff without so much as a warning to avoid that major KNOWN pitfall.  So if you're not gonna do it, I thought somebody should.  So they won't find out the hard way as I did, and countless others.

If you look at the creation date of this sticky it is 2008 and well before the problems with restoring files became evident. I suppose I could go back and edit it to warn people not to use the 'backup files' feature but instead use a USB HDD and real backup program to keep important files archived as I do before problems arise requiring a Recovery...but that is another whole subject to address. Maybe one day I will have the time to create a guide on 'Backup".

I do have another guide on Imaging which is considered by many to be the ultimate back and recovery option.Custom Recovery Options

Again, I am sorry to hear that HP Recovery let you down as far as backup & recovery of user files and that I did not post a 'warning' not to depend on it. (Actually I have never used that feature and if you notice-it is not one of the 'helpful' things I mention as being part of the program)

@kilawatts13

Recovery Media can be ordered on your Driver & Software page. Or use the Contact HP link at bottom of the same page:

Re: HP OS Recovery Disc-Hp Recovery Manager

Well, I ordered a set of disks from HP, and they failed to do anything at all - bad set?

i have an HP Pavillion a6200n with Vista Home Prem on it...

Was getting tons of Blue screens -to the point of unusable...I  deleted almost everything, trying to get it closer to new...didn't get better, so i ordered the disks from HP.

i followed the directions, and put the disk in and then did a start up - it read it, spun for awhile - "reading file" messages apperead - then.

"Recovery manger not found, ccnnot proceed with operation"

..or some similar message, sorry my flabergast brain won't remember the exact...

i am confused - i can't find anything yet via the HP FAQ's, but why the heck wouldn't it just overwirte and go to town, giveing me a clean and fresh start???

Thanks in advance for any help or  pointers, etc.

tom
