Have done restore process several times with the same results. How do I get the computer back to its original configuration?

Hi:
I am assuming you have nothing connected to the PC except the keyboard, monitor, mouse and power cord, correct?
You should not run the recovery disks with anything else connected.
You didn't add any internal hardware (with the exception of a new hard drive) that didn't come with the PC such as a video card, correct?
If you did, you should try removing it and see if the recovery disks work. These disks are an image of the original configuration for this model series of PC's, and only hardware that came with the PC may be recognized.
Hardware that was installed that was not part of the supported optional equipment may cause the recovery process to fail.
If all the above is not applicable, I suspect the set of recovery disks may be defective, or the hard drive is defective.

I have a newer keyboard and a second cd/rw drive. Is there any way to bypass this to get the recovery discs to work. I did try disconnecting the keyboard but got the same result. What's the alternative if the discs don't work, a total format of the computer?

Hi:
The keyboard shouldn't matter.
You can open the case and just remove the power plug to the second CD drive.
If the PC restores, just shut it down and plug the power cable back into the secondary CD, and XP should discover and install it.
If you live in the USA, you can buy another set of recovery disks for $10 for your PC if they are still available, by contacting HP at 1-800-334-5144.
You just need to provide them with the model # and serial number.
Otherwise you will need to install XP Pro (I assume that is what the license is for) with an XP Pro OEM installation disk and use the product key on your PC to activate it.
You cannot use any other type of installation disk in order to use the product key that is on the PC.

If you are installing XP PRO the correct set of CDs should be:
Restore CD - 325278-B25 restore for d530
XP OS CD - 341940-001 XP-Pro sp1a
