HP replaces hard drive: My recovery disks or theirs?

The hard drive on my G62-234DX, purchased in Aug 2010, failed during the warranty period. HP sent me a replacement with recovery disks. I used them.

Office 2010 Starter came loaded on the laptop, but it's not on the supplied recovery disks.  HP says they can no longer give me that software.

Can I retrieve it some way from the recovery disks I made last August?

Thanks.

Re: HP replaces hard drive: My recovery disks or theirs?

Hi:

I don't believe it is possible because there are no installation files.

There was a protected Q drive that had the Office 2010 starter files, and once you launched the initial installation from the icon on your desktop, that was it.

HP is correct. There is no standalone installation package for Office 2010 Starter. It only is installed on new PC's one time only. It may have been on the recovery partition, but I can't say for sure, and that is a moot point since your original hard drive is gone.

Thanks--even though that wasn't what I was hoping to hear.

[ Edited ]

I'm sorry I could not bring better news.

If you are looking for a free Office-type program that will open, edit and save Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, I highly recommend the free Oracle Open Office suite.

Here is the link to the download site. It looks and works very much like Office 2003.

Re: HP replaces hard drive: My recovery disks or theirs?

I thought you might be interested in an alternative solution, provided by an HP case manager:

"Thomas this  is the link to get into the download section of Microsoft: [url]

" It seems that the starter edition they added to the machines has been discontinued, but there are other options available to download. Please check the website and download the best option for you, all the ones available have a free trial of 60 days and then they ask to activate them, which is not really necessary and the office is functional if you don’t do the activation process."

He subsequently told me on the phone that this is what he had done and had been using Office without paying for several months... ... .....  :smileysurprised:  :smileywink:
