PC problem - CHKDSK fails to complete stage 2

HP slimline - vista 64 bit

computer keeps dying, screen goes blank

tried restoring to a point, but says there is a system error run chkdsk

chkdsk runs near to the end of stage 2 then screen goes blank, you can still hear the PC running

I would suggest starting the system in safe mode to see if the issue persists. If it works properly in safe mode that would point to software.

You could try to run a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

How long does the system stay on before it goes off? Would you have time to complete the clean boot steps?

problem started yesterday, DVIconnnected  screen kept blanking out, thought the pc wasnt booting up

got 2 monitors  

today swithced on

connected,  blue hp screen start up screen was appearing on the DVI connected screen

machine booted up on hdmi connected screen.

run various tests

we were trying to do a restore to a couple of day ago, but an error message appeared use chkdsk

had to reboot to get chdsk to run

now it gets past stage 1

at stage 2 gets it was "crashing out" when it got near the 811636 out of index entries processed, -

this time it got to stage 3 - started to run got so far  and then "screen blank" - you can hear the hard disk running,

hp startup screen started

as i type the windows screen started

then the chkdsk started again

Could you send me your serial and product numbers off your tower?

I want to check some specs on the system.

On the HP sticker there should be a S/N # and a P/N # or System number

I need the number that ends with "aba"

the system came up - normal startup ( forgot to do safe mode)

we copied some files to a stick

we then carried out instructions on  the ms troubleshoot  - prompted for a restart -  2 blank screens

If it still acts like it's running go ahead and shut it down see if you can get it in safe mode.

After you shut it off unplug the power cable from the back of the tower. Hold the power button down for 5-6 secs then plug power back in.

as soon as you hit the power button start tapping on the "F8" button. Keep tapping till you see the advanced boot options. Select Safe mode with command Prompt.

Let me know how it loads

we have restarted. but it started making noises. it sounds like one of the fans is not working properly. we will get it checked as it is still under guarantee. if the problem persists we shall know it is not the hardware and try your solutions. thanks for yout help.
