Original problem was a defective hard drive (WD 500GB) replaced with another WD 500GB. After restoring system with the recovery CDs setup did a series of restarts as usual. Then it seemed to repeat itself and wanted to keep going to the full screen of the setup files going from folder to folder. This continued for about 4-5 hours so I did the unthinkable and rebooted it manually. Now the blue HP set up screen comes up with the please wait status bar continously turning. The process logger window is in the top right corner. Recovery CDs were to original Vista 32bit Home Premium.

Here's what I can tell you about HP recovery. It can take longer than 4-5 hours. If the process is interrupted (like by rebooting the machine manually), then the recovery process will fail and need to be restarted. Also, please keep in mind that nothing should be hooked up to the computer during the recovery process except the power, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Anything else could also cause the process to fail.

Thanks for the response. I was able to disable the set up process through msconfig computer is running fine. Only issue I have now is the tv tuner program installs ok from the support page, but does not show up in the start menu. After that windows update downloaded drivers for the tv tuner. It is a Hauppauge card.

Hello stanger73, You may be able to resolve this issue with the TV card not being in the start menu.
I'm not sure of the operating system you are using, but you may be able to locate the executable file that opens the TV Program, using Windows Explorer.
It you can manage to locate the program, just right click on the program file name, and a menu should appear. Look for the Menu Listing of Send to Desktop, and click on this.
Then close out and look on the desktop and the Icon shortcut should be there. Just left click on this Icon, hold the mouse down and drag the Icon to the Start Orb, and the Start Menu should open. Just continue to drag the Desktop Icon to any place in the Start Menu.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.
Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem.

Hi, my harddrive crashed and had to replace the 500gb with a 1tb drive. Ran recovery CDs, but had to click ok manually on the sysprep prompt; once the system rebooted, it actaully created a 50gb partition for C and about 10gb for D drives leaving rest as unallocated; as many times I ran this process, same results.
Is there a way to just get the Vista Home premium CD/DVD to do a clean install?, during recovery process, my system sleeps and I think it fails to complete the recovery process.
