System Recovery won't finish

Sorry to jump in like that but reading your posts I might have a different approche for you.

Did any of you tried to enter the BIOS and do a "reset to factory default"?

Sometimes it happens the CMOS gets corrupted giving your machine a strange behaviour and, as far as I can tell, your issue might not be a disk issue.

As for upgrading to windows 7, it is advised by HP to perform a BIOS Update :

Before pgrading, resetting the BIOS may be an easy step to try.

i have a similar problem. when i try system recovery i get error code 0x400110020000100a. if problem persist contact hp support. any help or thoughts would be welcomed.

This is a known issue by HP.. but not yet fixed.. and no-one knows reason behind it...

I am having a similar problem.  HP Pavilion Elite m9517c. The original hard drive was giving me a "Hard Drive failure imminent" error.

Original hard drive was a 1Tb Samsung HD103UJ.  Purchased a new hard drive from on-line retailer, Samsung 1Tb Samsung HD103SJ as the UJ version was obsolete.  Installed new drive and ran System Recovery disks purchased from HP.

1st install worked for a few hours and hung up when Windows updates were installing.  Tried to do a new System Recovery and reinstall got to 12% and I received Error 1005.  Contacted HP Support and after much research buy the "tech" he told me that the system recovery install was intended for OEM hard drives and not retail.  Advice from HP Support was to buy a new tower.

Thinking of buying new operating system, Windows 7 and starting there.  Any recommendations before throwing more money at it?

I started this thread, and I promised to announce my results.  The PC was approaching the end of its three-year warranty, and I took it to the store for repair.  First, the HD and video card were replaced; the PC still had problems.  The motherboard was replaced, and that seemed to take care of the problem.

So what recourses do we have?  My in-laws a6400f just had the harddrive fail...  they had no recovery disks so I just spent the $30 to have HP send them 2 day express and now I've been sitting her since 8PM last night on the same screen (DO NOT turn off your PC...)  Of interest as well for this particular machine there is a notification regarding seagate disk drives put in these machines noting they would fail.  I've purchased HP's recovery disks and acquired a non seagate drive but I do not have a functional system at this point and I"m hard pressed to spend the money to call support if I"m understanding this is a known issue..  Has it been resolved yet?

Splinky  I have an m9517c that the HDD crapped out and had no recovery disks,From my research HP dosen't have them and appears to have no part # for them also I bought a western digital 1 tb online .I have a new copy of vista ultimate and can't get it to load ...say's it need's a driver loaded for the dvd multi drive? Any info you can give me would help?i,e. recovery info maybe part #'s.  sounds like I would be throwing money away?
