Your Recovery set is XP SP1 so you should be fine with anything from 120 gb-250gb. I would stay within the 160gb range just to be on the safest track.Good price on WD Blue 160 with 3 yr warranty.

Re: a230n refurb needs new hard drive

hello all
i went to B**t B*y and they had in stock a 350 GB PATAmade by Western Digital with tax about 87 dollars. i changed the hdd last nite and loaded the setup/recovery discs and everything went like clockwork. once again i couldnt believe that things would actually go like they do in the movies------ no problems at all. i was only able last nite to get
the SP2 installed with the new windows update's update. ( windows update itself had to be updated first----- pretty funny huh?) ill do some more updating again to get SP3 then more and more. it is wonderfull to have all the original programs installed and of course THEY will have to be updated too. i appreciate everyones help allthough i didnt realize that i had to have the PATA in order to hook it up last nite. i imagine i could have purchased an adapter but i would had to waited and so on.
you know what? you guys helped me out so much this time and last year
thanks again.

Re: a230n refurb needs new hard drive

HEY GUESS WHAT????

i decided to use the  WIN XP easy transfer wizard. i was hoping to get everything from my old pc to this one----a230n HP Pavilion----- and was hoping they would go into this one as another 'user' account.

they didnt.

is there a simple way to put all of my transfered files n settings into its own user account?

the old pc runs win xp professional and of course my new on is the a230n HP Pavilion running winxp sp3 home edition

(with the new hdd allready installed and with all the original programs from the set of recovery discs i bought and updated)........closing the barn door after the horse is gone---------who says that?

im also getting an error message saying the d drive that has the recovery partition is too full and running out of room........i think thats weird........the hdd itself has plenty of room still left on it after the transfer.

hey BTW

Re: a230n refurb needs new hard drive

Sorry but I've never used Easy Transfer, always preferred the manual way which has been best for me. I think you have to set up the account you want the files in first, and maybe even be logged into that acct during the transfer. Again, never used it so just guessing.

As for the Recovery partition, it is by design only large enough for the recovery files. Windows will sometimes complain about the lack of space>you can turn off the annoying warning message by editing the registry(not for the novice) or by running one of Kelly's excellent scripts. Disabling low disk space is done by using #65 on her page HERE Simply download & save it.Then click it to run.

Re: a230n refurb needs new hard drive

Many setting for XP and Windows 7 are the same so shouldn't cause any problem.Hopefully it will be better with that annoying popup gone on the XP machine.

Re: a230n refurb needs new hard drive

hi everyone

i found files other than the  recovery files on the partition designated for the recovery.

when i used the windows auto file transfer................transfering files from one pc to this one.......

i had two hdds on it " c " drive and the other hdd was labled my "D" drive.

when the files transfered im not sure but i think the d files went to the recovery partition.....labled d drive.

i believe thats why i kept getting the error message about the d drive filling up.

what do you think???

thanks

ron
