biohd-8 error running diagnostics on hard drive.

System is an HP Pavillion a6512p PC running Windows Vista.  Unable to boot system.  Get the following error running diagnostics on the hard drive.  BIOHD-8.  Does anyone know how to resolve this problem or what the error means?

The BIOHD-8 is a HDD error generated by the S.M.A.R.T hard drive monitoring system. This typically means your hard drive is about to fail. Please backup all of your files and data before this occurs. Also, if you haven't already done so, please try to create your HP Recovery discs. If you don't have already them and are unable to create them, you may need to order a set from HP before you can recovery your system with a new hard drive.
