Pavilion a6400f with VISTA 32 bit Home premium. System would not boot past HP splash page and all diagnostics seemed to imply things were OK. Inserted VISTA CD and entered product code and did reload to Windows partition. Existing files still seemed there after reload of VISTA, Had to download REA:LTEK RTL81xx driver from HP support site and internet and all seems to work fine - system loaded 102 Windows fixes including g31/33 chipset. Everything seems to work EXCEPT have exclamation mark in device manager for OTHER DEVICES - SM BUS CONTROLLER. Right click on properties says drivers are missing. I assume I am missing chipset but can't seem to find which one. Followed HP troubleshooting guide which took me to INTEL page for chipset but did not want to download a chipset with the warning below it. Ran dxdiag from start menu and and implies g33/g31 chipset but show drivers installed. Appreciate any thoughts...

Hi,
Try downloading and installing the Chipset driver on the link below.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL22167/pv
After the installation has completed, restart the PC.

I see that I had tried this download but went ahead and reran the download and replaced my copy with the new copy. I then went to the device manager and deleted the SM BUS CONTROLER and ran the install packet and rebooted the PC. The system complained about new hardware being found and attempted to find a driver and was UNABLE TO FIND DRIVER. I then reran the package again and rebooted and again the system complained about new hardware and again could not find software drivers to load for the Controller. Is there any chance this problem could be tied to a Service Pack release? I see my VISTA does not indicate any Service Packs installed. While the system has installed lots of updates (more than 125) since reloading the Operating System, it still shows no Service Packs on the System Properties Screen. Again thanks for the help as the problem is driving me to the edge. Is there a chance I do not care about the SM BUS though I hate to leave a 'flag" in the device manager as it might get me later.

Hi,
Go to Device Manager, right click on the 'Flagged Device' and select Properties. Click the Details Tab and use the dropdown box to select 'Hardware Ids'. Copy and paste the information now displayed with your next post.

from Device Properties there is tag Hardware ID's : Have copied them and pasted below.
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930&SUBSYS_2A6F103C&REV_02
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930&SUBSYS_2A6F103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930&CC_0C0500
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930&CC_0C05
Also from program CPUID have the motherboard as ASUSTek Computer INc. The program shows the chipset as P35/G33/G31 Intel ChipSet Rev A2.
Another question is that when I re-installed VISTA, I did not check the actual status of the hardware in the device properties but installed the NIC card driver and connected to the Internet. Windows immediately began download of updates and the 2nd update was:
Intel Corporation - Display - Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family
Installation date: 8/22/2011 12:44 PM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Recommended
Intel Corporation Display software update released in February, 2009
More information:

Any thoughts that this could be affecting my problem?
Again appreciate sugestions.

Interesting - no luck with that chip set either BUT took look at my file system on the hard drive and found that it still contained the directory windows.old from my reload of VISTA the other morning. I had thought I had done a full load but did not format the disc so appartently VISTA backed up my old windows directory into windows.old. In that folder was a file folder INF - I saw nothing obvious in the folder but on the install of the failed SM BUS one of the questions was point to a folder to search. I pointed to the windows.old.inf folder and the installer found software to install. Installer complained about the data not digitally signed but I said continue and the SM Bus was installed. It removed the exclamation mark from OTHER DEVICES and placed SM BUS in SYSTEM DEVICES with Intel ICH9Family with address of 2930. If I look at the properties of SM BUS under details it shows DRIVER VERSION 8.3.0.1008 with date of 1/13/2007 but under button for Driver Details it says no driver required. I am not sure what exactly all this says but everything appears to be working now and I guess to be safe I should back up the folder in case something like this happens again though probably just step forward to Windows 7. Thanks so much for all your help and ideas - you kept me focused on my problem.
