Hope someone can help me...
I have an HP laptop that I use in conjunction with an external monitor for increased desktop workspace. After returning from a weekend project, I hook my laptop up to the docking station and turn on my second monitor (the HP w2338h). All of a sudden, the second monitor flashes the desktop image for about a second then goes black/blank. While the image is showing (at a very lo-res), I can also hear a low static/hissing sound. After it goes blank, my power light stays blue (indicating that it is "on") instead of switching to a sleep mode/amber light. I also detect a funny smell for a about a minute afterwards...almost metallic, maybe? This monitor was replaced by HP in January, due to issues with vertical lines I was having with the one I originally ordered last June...so now the warranty is out. I just need to know if it has died, or is it fixable? Thanks!

I have an HP Pavillion laptop...which everything seems to be fine there. The problem is with the second monitor (the HP w2338h). I'm a graphic designer and rely on the larger monitor to create my projects on (better work space). This just started when I returned from a trip and plugged my laptop back in to the docking station and turned the larger monitor on. No indications of anything being wrong before I left.

What model HP laptop? How to Find the HP Model Number
What happens if you cable the monitor directly to the laptop?

I have the same problem suddenly with my HP LCD w2338h. It was working fine, just great, and now the screen dims slightly and goes black suddenly. I have to manually turn it off and turn it back on. Then do it again and it stays on for a few minutes and does it again. It does not seem to have an exact pattern of this so it might be remote internet execution. Windows 7 64
I downloaded the latest driver and it did not install correctly in the register on the control panel. When trying to reinstall with recommended settings, Access is Denied. Then a finish button for the installation. The front panel menu does not work with the keyboard and choices cannot be made that way now. The display is being controlled by a program somewhere or it is a hardware problem. Luckily, it is still under warranty.
There are no smells or abnormalities I can detect and nothing to indicate a problem. I do not use wireless and have it connected by HDMI cable to an HP Desktop and use a high speed cable modem.
I have looked through the cookies before deleting them and clearing the cache in IE. How many have this problem with this model and any information for troubleshooting this issue would be most helpful!

I am having the same exact issue with our w2338h monitor!!! Today is 8/29/10, and our warranty expired 8/12/10. The rep on the phone tried to sell me the $99 or the $49 extended warranties, and told me he could help me no further when I said no. He suggested I go to www.hp.com/support. I wasted an hour chatting with a rep there, told him the problems and had to repeat 2x everything, only to be told it's an "hardware issue" in the monitor itself. And then he tried to sell me a new monitor. After a year, my monitor went out? I'm very dissatisfied with HP right now.
Any resolution to your problem???

Did you find a solution or a root cause to the issue you were having? I have the exact same issue. Whenever I change the input the monitor flashes the image for a moment (e.g. PC image or HP monitor native image (e.g. "check input cable")) while also producing a low static/hising sound. Power light stays blue if I have a source connected. My monitor also produces a faint metallic smell.

I have been having the exact same problem with my HP w2338h for about 2 weeks. It's 3 years old and has given me no problems up until now. A search led me to this post - did anyone figure out the problem or should I junk this monitor?
