In theory, selecting the desktop mode from either the "Display Settings" or "Windows + P" should do the same thing. If you select (click) and accept;
Computer Only = active display will be on your laptop only
Duplicate = active display on both laptop and TV with same display
Extend = active display on both laptop and TV with an extended desktop
Projector Only = active display will be on your TV only
You may need to change the audio output device in the Control Panel to HDMI to get sound on the TV.

I too am having a problem connecting my HP to TV. It worked when I first got it. Then all video started just being a green screen. On the advice of a freind, I reset? and all video now works but I can not get the tv to hook up. TV says no input. I tried your windows+p but it says "PC can not project to another screen. Try reinstalling the driver." weel I am most on that one. I don't see a name on my computer to give other that HP.

The most practical solution would be to reset every time you want to connect a display. Its almost a sure thing it will work and it doesnt take any longer than 2 minutes each time.
