Did your check here for driver updates? I didn't see any driver updates but did see some firmware updates. Generally firmware updates allow for better media compatibility along with other fixes.
What application are you using?

What driver version is installed now? Go to the Control Panel and right mouse click the CD/DVD device and select driver then update and let Windows search for a driver update.

Using the Control Panel to update the driver claims I have the current best driver installed for my hardware. Here is the current Windows XP default driver that is installed...

There is no particular driver issue for WinXP to recognize a DVD drive. The problem of the system reporting the media not present is getting more frequent. See here: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_probl

I would suggest you go to Device Manager and then see if there is any error mark on the CD/DVD drive entry (e.g. Yello Exclamation or Red Cross marks etc.).
For yellow mark -- Uninstall the CD/DVD drive by right clicking on the CD/DVD drive entry in the Device Manager, select Uninstall. Then, Run this patch-- http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/cd_restore.reg
Now, reinstall the drive-- go to device Manager and click on Scan for hardware changes. This should resolve the issue.
For red mark -- Right click the CD/DVD drive select enable. If you are unable to do so, then you may have to check the cables and wires' settings in the tower.

Neither one of those fixes worked, but thanks for trying. I'm not giving up on this yet. I'll be back here in the shop on Tuesday. Thanks again. If anyone else has an idea... Please let me know.
Also the Windows Fix thing tried to tell me it wasn't a Recorder/Writer drive, but I know better because of the label on the front of the drive. Thanks.
