I have a new p6230y Pavilion desktop with Windows 7 Premium (64 bit) OS. Audio works, but every 15 minutes or so the PC takes control of the volume and either makes it 0% or 100%. The volume bar shows up in the right lower part of the screen. Manual adjust of the volume doesn't work, volume automatically goes back to either 0% or 100%. Going to task manager to delete the process doesn't work. A restart will get rid of the problem most of the time.
Any idea how to get rid of the spontaneous control of the volume?

I may have found the problem. I've been using a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse with the computer and I think the keyboard is sending extraneous signals to the computer. When I use the wired keyboard the problem goes away. Very weird.

I've had this problem with a number of large format HP laptops. This issue is related to OVERHEATING. I would be willing to be dollars to doughnuts that you had your laptop resting flat on the table and it was working hard when the volume/bass/treble/wi fi started freaking out. I've had the same issue numerous times and every time I can get it to go away just by propping up the machine so that it gets more air circulation underneath. Just try resting the back edge on your power supply brick. That's all it takes.
Note to HP: redesign your cooling or give your laptops some sort of kick-stand to give them better air flow.
