Ehoehl, welcome to the forum.
How are you using the webcam when having microphone problems; Skype, etc.? This will help us diagnose the problem.

I found this forum because I'm having near identical problems... except that my microphone lasts about only 10 seconds. When I go into the "Control Panels" and alter the properties of the microphone quality (from options marks "CD quality", "AM quality", "FM quality") the microphone will work again... for 10 seconds. I am also using a HP webcame HD 3100, and my computer is running on Windows 7. The microphone has these issues whether I'm signed in to Skype or not.
