On 8/26/16 I went to the software support page for my new OP Inkjet 8725 to download updated firmware. As I was reading the instructions a window opened on the HP page from a "specialist' who said he could help me install software. I had used the auto update from the printer twice but after downloading the software twice the install failed. I intended to download and install manually, which I did successfully later.

He asked me to use a link to download TeamView so he could help. I thought I was chatting with an HP rep. I downloaded TV. He immediately went to computer servcies and opened the system file. It showed many errors and warnings. The errors had nothing to do with installing the software so I asked if he worked for HP. He said no. He worked with Windows and said he could have a specialist fix my macine for $99.99 whioh would save me hundreds of dollars if I took it to a shop.

At that point I knew it was fraud and said I did not want to continue. He immediately shut down the several windows he had opened and temrinated the chat. I ran a full Defender check and found six different files inserted while I was on the phone with him labeled as Trojans and deleted them. I could not find any other traces of his being on my machine. I was using BootCamp on a MacAir.

I worry that HP itself has been hacked since the fraudulent chat appeared on HP's support page.

Interesting -- and a bit scary, too.  I am glad you appear to have come away unscathed.

I have notified an HP moderator about this -- while HP may not contact you directly, the story will no doubt engender an internal discussion on the subject!

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

Yep, this also happened to me! I had Apple do a complete scan on my computer for any viruses!
