Operating System: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

I am having problems trying to use AirPrint my computer and printer were bought in 2008 is there any way I can update my printer so that I can print from my iPad and iPhone. I can print no problem from my computer but would like to also be used to use my iPad and iPhone

From the following specs, it does not support mobile printing

The only solution I've found is to download an app (hp eprint worked for me.).
