I bought a new HP 61 XL black ink cartridge because the packaging says it is compatible with the HPEnvy 4500, however, the printer will not accept the ink cartridge. Please advise.

Hi,

 

This cartridge should be compatible with your printer.  What error message is your printer giving you? Try restarting your printer by powering down and unplugging for 30 seconds and the re-insert the cartridge.

I did as you suggested, however I am getting the message "This cartridge must be replaced."

Hi,

 

You could try cleaning the contacts at the back of where the cartridge slots int to the printer. They're copper coloured and should look clean and shiney.

Still the same. Also, I have a 61 black cartridge that I'm using and the printer accepts that one just fine, it just won't take this 61XL. So it doesn't seem the problem would be with connections.
