647947-001 question

Hi

I have a question about this part:

647947-001 SPS-DRV ODD SATA BD-R/RE+DVD SM

That is the only information I was able to find around the net. Can anyone tell me more about this part - manufacturer, model?

Please use plain text.

If it is connected to a PC or notebook and is working I would use the device manager to get the manufacturer ID for it. What are you looking for? A firmware update?

It is a Blu-ray BD-R/RE DVD±RW SuperMulti DL Drive. Device manager is the way to discover this dvive.

How to find a driver for a device

Type device manager in the Search programs and files box and click on Device Manager.

Click on the triangle to the left of the device to open the tree for the device.

Righ-click on the device and select Properties. In the Properties window select the details tab and use the dropdown menu to select Hardware ids. Copy that entire alphanumeric string to your notepad.

Go to the PCI Vendor device list and use the alphanumeric digits after the VEN_  from the alphanumeric Hardware ids that you saved to your notepad.  Find it on the list and now you know the manufacturer of the device.

Click on the manufacturer link and it will take you to another database for that manufacturer where you will use the alphanumerics after DEV_ to identify the device

Now you know the manufacturer and name/designator of the unknown device. Use that information in a search engine like Google or Bing to find the device driver.

You now know how to use the operating system to discover unknown devices! You can do this with any unknown or known device that is recognized by the Device manager. This has been a workable solution since Windows XP.

Wow, dude, thank you for your comprehensive answer, but I know how to find a device by its ID via pcidatabase.com or devid.info. That's not the current case. Currently I have in my ProBook 4330s this one:

647946-001 DVD±RW SuperMulti Dual-Layer optical disk drive - SATA interface, 12.77mm tray load - Includes bracket and bezel

and I was thinking for an upgrade. This one looks like is the best I can find for my laptop:

647947-001 SPS-DRV ODD SATA BD-R/RE+DVD SM

You see, I'm asking about its manufacturer and model, because I don't have it (yet).

Re: 647947-001 question

That 's a good one. :smileytongue:

The device is branded as an HP product and sold by HP and other vendors online. Good luck in your search. It will probably be less effort to just wait and use the device manager. Maybe some else here has that esoteric information readily available.
