Hi
I'm trying to upgrade laptop CPU from AMD Athlon II P340 to Phenom II N640. After installing new CPU the only things happening are fans and drives spinning, and the caps lock flashes continuously without stopping at a constant 4-5 second interval, with no discernable code. I suspect it may be a faulty cpu, but not sure if I'm overlooking something. The bios has been updated to version F.29. I reinstalled the P340 after checking all connectors and the laptop runs fine.

Hi,
This is not going to work, the P340 is a 25w chip and the N640 is a 35w chip. You need to use the SAME TDP value to be able to get it up and running.
Regards.

Could you please explain why the power is a problem. It uses the same motherboard and bios rev as the G42-475dx which also uses the n640 chip. Thanks for your help.
