I know that they can be purchased with 16 gig. So, is there any reason I cannot buy 2 8 gig sticks ( assuimg all the other parameters are the same speed, voltage etc) and replace the exiting pair of 4 gig sticks?

Please post the product number which can be found on the same sticker as the serial number.
The model # you posted does not show up. I understand it is a dv6-something, but that isn't enough info.

It may help, but there are still a few varieties of that notebook as you can see from the link below:
The service manual indicates a model with an Intel processor supports up to 16 GB of memory.
See chapter 1, page 5.

The product number is LM332AV and the model is dv6t-6100 It is a quad core i7. So, the answer appears to be yes. Given the memory in the system I am assuming that i need to user ddr3 -1333 1.5v sodims.
