DV7-4143EA - Possible upgrade hard disk with SSD. Can I upgrade this laptop with an SSD?

I'm thinking of replacing the HDD with an SSD.

Is this laptop able to run an SSD, with its AMD processor and limited BIOS?

If so, any recommendations?

Neil

Hi,

I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be possible.:smileyhappy:

I believe that you can use an SSD drive in that laptop without worries. I would recommend Corsair Force SATA II (SATA II supports the laptop) drives because they have a high read/write speed. They are also cheaper than Intel (also top quality) drives. I don't have any experience with Crucial or Kingston drives but they might be good too..

The laptop is a 17" one so a system SSD and a hdd for data in one is a perfect solution for a computer..

Thanks for your reply.

I have read a review of the OCZ Technology 240GB Vertex 3 Series SATA III 2.5" Solid State Drive, and it looks prettty hot stuff, quoting sequential reads and writes of 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively.

Any experience with this brand, etc?

OCZ have also good drives but that one you mentioned is a SATA III one. You never get the full SATA III speed, however it should work as a SATA II drive well..

It's been awhile since your ssd upgrade, so I'd like to ask you if the upgrade went well, and if you recommend doing the upgrade to SSD.

Reading several reviews on SSD it seems that they are prone to give you errors when used as a booting drive, like missing files during bootup, or BSOD's. I'm thinking of doing the same upgrade to my laptop (dv2615) but the high rate of bad reviews is holding me.

Thanks

So far, I have had no system related issues after install, in connection with the SSD. This is just my personal experience though. I fitted a 240GB drive which made a factory recovery install impossible as the drive was below the recommended size (which escapes me). I had to install Windows 7 via disk (entering the laptops Windows key) and then reinstall everything one by one from my installers. I lost the recovery manager software, which you can only install via system recovery. Neil
