HP Pavilion dv6 6140us Ram Upgrade what will it do on the Windows Experience Index?

[ Edited ]

My system came with 6 gigs of memory and is shared with video graphics.  if I increase this to 16 gigs will it improve the windows experience index for desktop and gaming graphics?

Also in looking into memory I have found 2 diff types that are suppose to be compatiable DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64 •   •  Part #: CT232... and DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64 •   •  Part #: CT23...  Seeing I would be replacing is later faster memory?  If so can this system actually use it?  If it is faster like I assume I am guessing it would increase the Ram rating by a little is this correct?

I must say I am very impressed with this system.  On a 1 to 7.9 windows rates it as follows 6.6 Processor, 7.3 RAM, 5.8 or at times 5.9 Desktop Graphic's, 6.5 3D Gaming Graphic's with upgraded SSD drive I get the max 7.9 rating, 5.8 with stock HD.

So to be clear what I am wondering is if I increase to the "faster" memory and 10 more gigs total memory will the video graphics show improvement due to 1 more total availiable memory or is it at it MAX now with 6 gigs?  2 due to faster memory will this also or by itself increase the desktop and gaming graphic's rating as graphics is shared memory?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Re: HP Pavilion dv6 6140us Ram Upgrade what will it do on the Windows Experience Index?

Hi,

I don't think it will improve the index and if it does, then not too much. I have benchmarked my laptop with 6 and 8GB of RAM and got a better result with the 6GB. The FSB is probably 1333MHz so when you buy the faster one it will downclock to 1333MHz. However, I would use the faster one. It may increase a bit the memory index but Windows always display the lowest rating and it's mostly the vga. If you don't play games stick with the 6GB..

thanks for UR response...

I agree and assumed if it affected the index that it would be by a small amount 1 or 2 tenths in possibly 1 or 3 area's.   The FSB is a important one in regards to if this system can actually handle the faster memory. Or like U said the system will just downgrade it...

I could save some money if I just bought one 8 gig strip of the slower memory and replaced the 2 gig strip I have and end up with 12 gigs total.   But once again what does this really do for me?  I do play games... That is why I asked in original post if it actually would give me more total video memory by doing the upgrade.

With the current 6 gigs of memory what is max % the video can use.  If I increase to 12 or 16 gigs what is max % the video can use?

HP Employee might be needed to answer these questions.

Thanks once again for UR response!

The graphics card uses up to 3GB of RAM so when you will upgrade to 12GB the vga can use all 3GB but can't say it for sure. The BIOS takes care of it automatically..
