Maximum ram in DV6t-6000 CTO

Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion dv6t-6000 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC which I bought about a year ago. I have searched exhaustively for the maximum memory the PC supports.

The two manuals I downloaded from HP site had two different answers. one said 8GB maximum. one said 16GB maximum if equipped with an Intel processor.

My system is having Intel Core i7 2630QM. So I am wondering if I can go upto 16GB.

Crucial.com gave only 8GB as maximum memory supported. But I saw from a different post in a forum that sometimes Crucial scanner also gives a lower estimate for the maximum memory.

Any help regarding this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Hi:

There are two editions of the manual. The first edition and the second edition.

The second edition revises the memory info to 16 GB for PC's with Intel processors such as yours.

Accordingly, you can install 2 x 8 GB of PC3-10600 memory.

I would rather invest money to an SSD than to a memory upgrade. 8GB of RAM is enough even for playing games (in case of a dedicated chip) so 16GB is a bit pointless because the hdd slows the system down. However, I agree with Paul that 16GB should be possible but make sure that there is the latest BIOS.

You're very welcome.

A memory upgrade is the cheaper way to go.

If you can swing it, Pepe is right, a SSD will rock your PC's world.

However, you can't use your recovery disks to reload W7 unless your SSD is close to the same size as your HDD, which will probably not be the case considering how much they cost.

So, if you decide to get an SSD, I have a free workaround for you to reinstall W7:

Before you remove your current HDD, copy the SWSetup folder off your C:\ drive along with any other files you want.  That folder contains several sub-folders which contain the driver and software installation files for all of the programs that came installed on your PC except Office Starter 2010. That, you will have to do without.

If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.

Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.

Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.

The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.

Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
