Ok fair enough, I guess it's safer to swap it for something it can handle and not risk anything

That would be my recommendation.

 

But you are correct in your assumption.  The lower voltage memory is designed to conserve battery power.

 

So the question is...does the chip just drain the battery faster, or is it slowly killing your motherboard because of the excess voltage demand?

 

That, I do not know. 

 

But I'd rather blow $40 bucks on the right memory module, and have everything run right, and chalk it up to a learning experience, than trash my several hundred dollar PC and chalk that up to a learning experience.
