Problem installing new HD in Pavilion dv4t - help!!

Greetings and thanks in advance for some much-needed help.

I have an HP Pavilion DV4T notebook and needed to upgrade the 300gb hard drive to a larger one.  Got the

new drive today, perfect size and installed perfectly.  Re-booted, using the 3 recovery discs I burned on this

same computer just for this purpose.  All went well, until I suddenly got this error message:

THIS PC IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THESE SYSTEM RECOVERY DISCS.  YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO

CONTINUE TO RECOVER THIS SYSTEM WITH THESE DISCS.

Now, these are the exact discs I burned on this exact computer for the purpose of doing this recovery!

What is happening, and what to do??

The hard drive I am replacing works perfectly, so it's available for any work-around that might involve

putting it back in for any reason, but I'd sure like to get this done without pulling the computer apart

and putting it back together again!  Any advice would be gratefully received!

Many thanks,

Jonathan

Hi

The disc which you have created is corrupted hence you have two option either call HP Technical support directly and place the order for RCD OR click on the link given below to order the disc online yourself.

Order Recovery Discs for Windows 7, Vista, or XP

Re: Problem installing new HD in Pavilion dv4t - help!!

Manjunath, thanks for quick reply.  I am confused, as the 3-disc set I made was executed perfectly, confirmed at every step by the HP software, and has been sitting securely on my shelf in an airtight disc box since the moment it was successfully created.  Don't understand how it would have become corrupted, but if it is, I presume HP will quickly send me the "uncorrupted" discs without charge, yes?  In any event, I clicked on the link you provided and it was a dead link.  Are you sure there are no other possibilities?  Many thanks for your help.

Re: Problem installing new HD in Pavilion dv4t - help!!

Your not the first person to have this problem with recovery disc created yourself. Similar problems arise with older HP recovery disc and larger hard drives not correctly partitioning correctly. A solution could be to order a new set of HP recovery disc or buy a hard drive cloning kit. Another big recover disc problem is an apparent complete download and burn recover disc that did not truly and fully download.

If you just want data files off an older hard drive, a SATA to eSATA cable or SATA to USB cable will do the trick.

Re: Problem installing new HD in Pavilion dv4t - help!!

Thanks Manjunath and Scifione, let me give you an update, as I thought this probelm was fixed but there's a new frustrating twist.

I spoke to HP tech support.  They said it wasn't a matter of corrupted discs, rather that when recovery discs are made they include a "snapshot" of the dimensions of the hard drive they were made on, for purposes of allocating space for reinstallation etc, so when the hard drive is upgraded to a larger one, as I am trying to do, the recovery disc's "measurements" are thrown off.  Understandable in the case of this upgrade from 300gb to 1TB.  HP was happy to find and ship out a new set of recovery discs for me.

They just arrived and I popped Disc 1 into the computer and booted up.  The light on the disc bay fired up.  But instead of beginning the recovery process -- as my self-made discs did, before encountering the Error Msg -- this HP disc simply caused the computer to come up with the msg: NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY.

So -- what now??

Thanks, again, for any input -- am stuck here glaring at the screen without a clue!

Re: Problem installing new HD in Pavilion dv4t - help!!

PS - and just to further clarify: When I pop my "old" (i.e. self-made) recovery discs back into the notebook, it accepts them just fine in terms of booting up and starting the Recovery process -- "Loading Windows Files..." comes onto the screen, the blue screen comes up, everything seems to be fine -- until the Error Message, "These discs are not supported by this machine", etc., which was the original Error Msg that sent me to HP for updated discs.  So, the Error Msg that I get with the new HP discs, i.e. "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE", is simply wrong -- there IS a bootable device, but for some reason these new HP discs cannot access it or work in it.  Called HP and they are "researching" this, but am hoping one of you benevolent geniuses can beat them to it!  Thnx.

Re: Problem installing new HD in Pavilion dv4t - help!!

UPDATE - I poked around elsewhere on this site, and found where an HP tech recommended to someone with a related issue to remove the AC cord & battery, press the "start" button for 1 minute, then try again.  I did this -- and it WORKED!  HP recovery now starting with new HP discs -- will keep all posted for final result, and hopefully a big fat green CHECK mark can be placed on this soon.  Thnx.
