Re: Hard Drive Replacement & Memory Upgrade for a Pavillion dv1000

I just obtained a used dv1000 notebook (laptop).  It works and I have the original system disks for it but the 60GB hard drive is failing.  So I want to replace that with a new one that I'll get from newegg but I'm not finding the documentation particularly helpful in choosing a specific drive that is compatible.  Same goes for increasing the RAM from the current 500K to 1 or 2GB.

Any recommendations on a new HD and increased RAM?

Also with a new clean HD and increased RAM will this thing then work with (32bit) Windows 7?  My goal is to be able to use this for basic word processing and web surfing and old games that aren't compatible with my 64bit Windows 7 machine.  Thus W7 isn't a must have, it's just smoother and faster to run than XP.  But I really need to replace that HD and add some more RAM.

You should have a Service tag attached to bottom which has full model number(1) and P/N(2).

Re: Hard Drive Replacement & Memory Upgrade for a Pavillion dv1000

I'm back for a few moments of quiet and sanity.

Here's my tag information:

1) HP Pavillion dv1000t

2) p/n ED338AV

3) HP Pavillion dv1000

I spent a fair amount of time doing a destructive reinstall and then the updates to clear out lots of old junk.  Then the tedious work of removing all those junk duplicative programs that management higher-ups feel that "store bought" computers have to be weighted down with (I've been building my own desktops since my 1994 Gateway, this is the first laptop I've taken on).

Given the price of new laptops I've noticed in the last few days I can't justify trying to make this one a W7 machine even if it is possible to do so.  But it isn't beat up so I would like to get a new hard drive in it before the present one totatlly fails and it could really use more than the current 500MB of RAM it now has.  Then I should have a nice enough portable 32-bit computer to put some older software on that W7 doesn't like.

As I have the original system disk I'm hoping that it won't be a problem loading the OS on a new hard drive too.

[ Edited ]

Link to Service & Maintenance Manual:

Hdd suggestion.(Note:most HP laptop hdds have a plastic adapter across the pins which must be removed & placed on a retail hdd.)

For memory I would go to Crucial and use their Memory Scan Tool:

http://www.crucial.com/

Or use the preselected options offered for DV1000t:

Re: Hard Drive Replacement & Memory Upgrade for a Pavillion dv1000

OK, that's a lot better guide on Crucial's site than the last time I dealt with finding new RAM.  The price is great so I ordered the chips up right away and need to try to remember to look into getting some more for the laser printer if the price for chips for that is as low.

That'll give me a few days to poke around looking for a better price on the hard drive, I'll see what is in the adverts I get from a few other parts places during the week.

Then I should be able to do a last entry here and close the thread out.

Re: Hard Drive Replacement & Memory Upgrade for a Pavillion dv1000

Very nice.  Is there a reason that a 320GB or greater one such as http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3969444 wouldn't work?  Other than having to partition the drive?  As I recall when I replaced the drive in my old desktop from a 60 to a 160GB or greater one (it's been a while since I fired that computer up which gets used for converting vinyl records to digital now, another project that has been left to idle) XP couldn't recognize that much in a single drive so it had to be partitioned.

I'm hoping that I won't have any problems when I use the original HP system disk to reinstall XP on the new drive.  If so with that and the 2GB of RAM I'll have a pretty nice usable laptop for a modest investment.

Re: Hard Drive Replacement & Memory Upgrade for a Pavillion dv1000

OK.  The new RAM came a little over a week ago, installed and worked just fine.  Got the 320GB Western Digital hard drive and that arrived last Thursday or Friday.

Took the old HD out, took the sleeve off of it, put it on the new one and it didn't seem to fit very well.  Booted with and without the XP CD and it couldn't find the new HD.  Took the new HD out for a closer look and saw that it couldn't plug into the laptop socket for it.  PANIC.  Then I remembered from the HP manual there is another piece I needed to take off the old HD; there it was, the little plastic socket adaptor.  Plugged it into the new HD and it all fit and started up and let me load up XP from the original CD included with the laptop.

Now it was time to download the 1,000,000 updates for XP.  But no such luck, it wouldn't connect to the internet via LAN cable or wireless no matter how I tried to set up a new network connection for it.  After a couple of days of on and off messing around that I went and started poking around on other HP forums and by blind luck happened upon one that noted I needed to download a bunch of HP drivers specific to the laptop via a working computer onto a flash drive or CD.  Did the internet drivers first and it then allowed me to connect into my home network via wireless but not via the LAN cable.  So I let it do most of the XP updates that way why I went off and did some useful stuff.  Yesterday when I had time I got the complete set of HP drivers for it and loaded and installed them all and that gave me LAN cable home network/internet access without any further problems.  Tested both cable and wireless modes by disabling one and using the other and found both to be actually working.  The HP drivers also made some other nice improvements in the laptop performance, most notably the graphics.

The computer boots up really fast now too even though the XP it's running started out as a service pack 1 edition.

So now with the base computer and OS functions up and running I'm installing the anti-virus & firewall and then can start loading some software I can't or don't want to put on my 64-bit desktop regular computer.

Case closed, I hope.
