Upgrading wireless card to Centrino 6230

I am trying to upgrade my wireless card in my DV7.  The maintenance and service guide shows this:

For use only with computer models equipped with an Intel processor:

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 WLAN module 631956-001

I ordered 631956-001 and I got a Intel Centrino N-1030, same as the wireless card in my system.  Contacted HP Parts and they sent me 636672-001 which is the Centrino N 6230 but that card will not work in my system-unsupported wireless card.

2 questions for a an expert:

1)  Since the 631956-001 is really a Centrino N-1030 and not the Centrino N-6230 is this the reason is is unsupported in the BIOS?

2)  Is the Centrino N-6230 incorrectly listed in the "whitelist"  of approved wireless adapters?

I have seen all over the forums/internet lot's of confusion around the correct part number and what is compatible with different systems. What can be done to correct this issue?  Tech support and Case managers are not very helpful.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

My notebook is HP DV7-6C90US, Part number A6X00UA#ABA.  I purchased the notebook in the US, back in Feb.

Re: Upgrading wireless card to Centrino 6230

I am curious to find out if the Centrino 6230 is correctly listed in the "whitelist"?  Sounds like I am fighting a loosing battle. From reading this forum and others, most people just give up trying to upgrade the wireless card.  All I wanted to do is upgrade my wireless card to one that supports 5Ghz, I guess that is too much to ask.

I think it's incorrectly listed in the manual. I don't know why HP put those junk 1x1 adapters in 201X models when routers work at 450Mbps. I'm waiting for the new Ivy Bridge laptops but if these will be equipped with some of those 1x1 cards I won't buy it or maybe after a modded BIOS will be available.

According to the manual there is no a 5GHz adapter so the upgrade is not possible..

Re: Upgrading wireless card to Centrino 6230

I am surprised that HP put such a low end wireless card in what they are marketing as the "Ultimate Mobile performance and entertainment machine". The card doesn't even support 5Ghz. Guess I am just stuck with the crappy, slow card.  The main problem is that the service guide lists the Centrino 6230 incorrectly. Appears that is has been the way for a long time, with no correction.  Even when talking to HP reps, they use the Service Guide for upgrade information. So what happens if the Service Guide is wrong and is never corrected?  Bad information keeps getting passed on and the customer is on the losing end. The whole situation is frustrating and should be addressed.

This is the reason why I will never buy a laptop with a poor wireless card even when the other components are the high top ones..

Re: Upgrading wireless card to Centrino 6230

I agree, but HP makes it very hard to find out what the Wireless card actually is.  Just by checking the specs, it doesn't show what wireless card is in the system.  Shows generic stuff like 802.11 G/N.  I guess they save a few bucks by putting the slow cards in high systems.  Then they prevent upgrading to a faster card.  Still don't understand my the put cards that don't support 5Ghz in the high end notebooks.
