What is the mysterious Local Drive (Q)?

Hi,

My new laptop came with a drive setup different than I'm used to.

What is the "Local Drive (Q:smileyhappy:"?

It shows 0 bytes and access is denied.

It shows in Explorer but not in Computer Management yet Q is not available as a letter.

What is the "SYSTEM" drive with no drive letter?

 Access is denied.

It shows in Computer Management but not in Explorer.

What is the "HP_TOOLS" drive with no drive letter?

 Access is denied.

It shows in Computer Management but not in Explorer.

Is it safe to assign or change the drive letter of these?

Thanks for any help,

Steve

Re: What is the mysterious Local Drive (Q)?

Hi,

The local Q drive is probably created by MS Office 2010 installer for unpacking files while installing the MS package. Don't worry about that..

[ Edited ]

As stated above: the Q drive is from Microsoft. The Hp Tools Drive is from HP and works in conjunction with the HP Support Assistant, which concerns your particular model laptop. Please, do not change the drive letters or interfere so these tools can be accessed by Hp Support in the future should the need arise.

You can find out more in Windows 7: "Taking possession/Owning your laptop"
