Re: memory upgrade

Hi:

Did you have memory in both slots previously?

It could be one of two things:

1. If you always had an empty memory slot, the slot could be bad.

2. One of the new memory modules could be bad.

Test the machine with one of the memory modules removed and reinstall one of the old memory chips you removed in its place.

If the memory increases, then the memory chip is bad. If the memory stays the same, then I would have to think the slot is bad.

You may need to test both of the new memory chips one at a time.

Re: memory upgrade

tha system is suppose to handle a max of 1 gig but it seems like its max is 512?

even with 1 new 512 and 1 old 256 it only reads 512

Re: memory upgrade

Hi:

Sorry I don't have any idea then, what the issue can be.

I just read all of the BIOS release notes and none address memory issues.

Service manual states 2 x 512 MB should work.

Since Crucial guarantees compatibility, I would just return the memory modules as there apparently is an issue either with those chips, or the notebook's inablility to handle them for some unknown reason.

I've heard of some rare instances on HP notebooks where if the notebook calls for PC2100 memory chips and you install PC2700 memory chips, they won't work (even though they are supposed to be backward compatible).

But normally the notebook won't even boot up if that is the case.

Re: memory upgrade

Hi:

No, the slots cannot be configured to allow for different size memory like some video memory settings can be.

Installation should be been painless, and 1 GB should have shown up.
