how do i make sure i am ordering the right drive? which part of the product specifications
will tell me that the replacement hard drive will fit the cq60 212us?

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
Supported hard drives with HP part numbers are found in chapter 3, page 3-6.

If you want better performance from the hard drive at the expense of some battery life between charges, you can opt for a 7,200 RPM drive. If time between recharging is of paramount importance to you, then stick with a 5,400 RPM drive.
You need a SATA II drive.
You can order one from HP by the part numbers listed but I would recommend you get one from an independent retailer where you can get one for less and of good quality.
Here are 2 drives I recommend:
7,200 RPM: 320 GB
