You can install a 4 GB module but you need W7 Home Premium in order to use the 4 GB in Windows.

That is why HP states the max memory is only 2 GB, because W7 Starter is the only OS they offer.

The hardware supports up to 4 GB of memory.

W7 Starter can only support a max of 2 GB.

If you live in the USA, these chips should work just fine.

thank you for your reply. hp also said mini with win starter would recognize only 1gb ram but people report sucess with 2gb ram. n2800 processor supports 4gb ram says intel. hp site says win home 32 bit will recognize 3gb ram so maybe bios will also support. some have stated sucess.

I wanted to share some more info with you but the website went down and I lost my post.

The n2800 processor supports 4 GB of memory and is 64 bit capable.

What I don't know is if it has the architecture to "see" the entire 4 GB in W7 32 bit.

I don't know of anyone who has installed a 2 GB memory chip in W7 Starter and not have windows see/use all 2 GB.

I personally installed a 2 GB chip in an Acer mini with W7 starter and W7 saw and used all 2 GB.

I wonder if you were to install a 4 Gb chip and the 64 bit version of W7, if all 4 GB would be seen/used or if less than 4 GB would be used due to hardware reservations.

If you go for the 4 GB module and upgrade to W7 Home 32 or 64 bit, please post back and let us know what show up as far as memory availability goes.

Hi,

I have recently upgraded to 4GB RAM in my Mini 210 4000, with the n2800 (I immediately upgraded to 2GB on purchase, because it was the 'right thing to do'). 

The 4GB shows up, but with only 2GB usable, as expected, in Win7 Starter, but I assumed with a 64bit OS everything would be fine and dandy.

I have tried installing the 64bit Ubuntu (12.04), which tells me that my system is incompatible, while the 32bit version (of Ubuntu) works fine, showing 2.9GB usable.

I had a cursory glance at the BIOS but couldn't find anything to enable the 64bit support.

Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

Did you try booting from a 64 bit W7 installation DVD?

If that doesn't boot either, then there must be some other hardware that is not 64 bit capable. 

The processor specs state it is.  I always thought that was all that was necessary to run a 64 bit OS--a 64 bit capable processor.

Hi Paul,

Unfortunately I won't be able to get a copy of Win7 64 until the end of the month, when my institution renews it's Dreamspark licence.

All the data sheets certainly say it supports 64bit, as you say, so has HP hobbled the motherboard somehow?

I will try Win7 64 as soon as I can, and will keep on investigating BIOS and support in the meantime.

Hi, Bruce:

You can make your own W7 x64 bit installation media.

If it boots and allows you to get to the installation window, it will work.

Below is the link to the W7 ISO download files. Select the 64 bit version you plan to use. Then you can use that and enter the product key from the package you get when you actually plan to install W7.

Since you have a Mini, it may be more convenient to install via a USB flash drive.

If you have a 4GB or larger USB flash drive you can install W7 that way.

Just follow these instructions...

Download the MS W7 USB installation tool, and read the instructions on the page for use.

You may also need to do this mod like I did if the flash tool errors out.

Download the bootsect file form http://www.everettsporting.com/bootsect.zip

You will need to go to the control panel, select the large icon view, go to the folder options icon, View tab, and select the show hidden files and folders option.

Once downloaded, copy the BootSect.exe file to the same folder that includes the installed Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool.exe file. The default install directory of that file in Windows 7 is C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Apps\Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool\

Run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool application as indicated on the Microsoft Store web site. The end result will give you a bootable USB flash drive that contains everything you need to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7.
