does the RPM make any difference? i mean is the pc limited by the speed?

If your budget limited 500 GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s it's minimal, for few bucks more you can bought something like
Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive

You should check first of all it's SATA not PATA hard drive, and also form factor 2.5" for Notebooks, not 3.5" it's for Desktops only. Other parameters not critical, bigger size of space, amount of cache and RPM
