I think my printhead must be bad as I get an error re alignment and about every other line prints lighter than the previous one. I'm out of warranty, of course, and seem to go round and round on the HP website regarding support. This was an expensive printer and I would like to know where to purchase a print head (part #) and can I install myself? If not where can I get it repaired (zip code 92122). I have a few hundred dollars invested in the 02 ink cartridges, so don't want to purchase a new printer.

Hello Isurrey,
Did you go through the steps from this document (basically clean the printhead, make sure to use a plain white paper when aligning the printer (I would suggest to not use a recycled paper when aligning)):
Unfortunately I think it will be hard to replace the printhead yourself. The printhead in the Photosmart C8180 is fixed in the printer. You should be able to call HP's support and pay for an out of warranty repair or replacement of your printer, you can find more information here:

Yes, I went through each step and even replaced the black ink, but no change. Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay for a call to tech support. I was searching online for repair services here in San Diego and people want a $100 per hour.... ugh... I can buy a new printer for that.
