As promised in my post to report on progress, I herewith do:
HowardGlas indicated that his efforts at soaking the printer head in rubbing alcohol (surgical spirits in my vocab), I tried his solution in desperation. And by golly, it worked. But I had lost about 60% of the ink in the cartridge in all my efforts to solve the issue. The first attempt at cleaning the print heads failed (soaking in hot water); the second (surgical spirits) worked.
But still, that does not explain why the heads and cartridge (in all combinations) worked in another printer...
HP is a wonder machine. You wonder what next...
HP, please do something about what apepars to be a common problem!!!!

@dianes954, I would suggest following this document, which guides you through a couple of steps to resolve the issue.
