As promised in my post to report on progress, I herewith do:

HowardGlas indicated that his efforts at soaking the printer head in rubbing alcohol (surgical spirits in my vocab), I tried his solution in desperation. And by golly, it worked. But I had lost about 60% of the ink in the cartridge in all my efforts to solve the issue. The first attempt at cleaning the print heads failed (soaking in hot water); the second (surgical spirits) worked.

But still, that does not explain why the heads and cartridge (in all combinations) worked in another printer...

HP is a wonder machine. You wonder what next...

HP, please do something about what apepars to be a common problem!!!!

In the same boat, replaced the printhead, cartriges, #3 reset, power down reset niothing works. Did you ever get yours going?

OK, I did all of the recomended proceedures including replacing the print head with a new HP printhead. Tried multiple resets and still the printer will not print black.

What next?

Never got it to work properly.  I am looking for another printer.  Any recommendatons?

I am not going through all of that! This is ridiculous! HP can't seem to solve the problem, why should I waste my time and money trying! Looking for another printer!

I'll probably look for another soon. I've got a "Brother" in my clockshop and it's adequate. Picture printing not as high quality as the HP but ok otherwise.

If the troubleshooting document Lions99 posted above does not resolve the issue the post here may help.
