HP Officejet Pro K5400 - ink expiration

My black cartridge (88XL) is showing as expired with almost 75% of ink capacity still showing.

According to http://www.hp.com/pageyield/articles/uk/en/InkExpiration.html, I can override this:

Override—you can continue printing without replacing the ink cartridge, by following instructions on the printer, in the user manual, or in the ink cartridge expiration message on the computer screen.

There are no instructions on the printer nor in the user manual and I do not get an "ink cartridge expiration message on the computer screen.

I have spent the past 45 minutes exploring the web and the HP site and can find no instructions.

Can someone help me please?

David

Hey there dd_uk,

According to the user manual you can override this message by pressing and holding the power button, while pressing the resume button three times. All lights except the power light go off at this point. Damage that results from this action however is not covered under the warranty, as a caution.

The recommendation is still to replace the expired ink for optimal performance and to prevent unexpected issues.

You can find the user manual here:

Re: HP Officejet Pro K5400 - ink expiration

Thanks for the solution, but this has led to another problem.

Every time I now print I get no response from the printer in any way shape or form. I can ping the IP address and I can call up the printer page, so comms are good.

The only way I can get the printer to print is to turn it off and turn it back on. It then works for 1 print job only.

Re: HP Officejet Pro K5400 - ink expiration

Without looking up your specfic ink cartridges, I believe they are similar to the 10 andf 11 sizes used in my CP1700.   I have been refilling my "expired' cartridges since 2002 and am currently using cartridges with expiration dates ranging from 2002 through 2011.

When a new cartridge is installed in my CP1700, the chip in its baseplate has the date burned in it.  Once the expiration date is reached, it stops working and back dating your computer won't help because the CP1700 has a memory board with a back up battery.  I slipped a piece of thin plastic between the memory battery and the positive spring connector and now my printer uses "expired " refilled cartridges with no problem.

Until I found out about this battery work around, I refilled my ink cartridges until they expired.  Now, i'm sucessfully using 2002 ink cartridges.

When  I print a service report  (ON + feed page times 10), it shows the expiration dates of all my expired ink cartridges but the printer doesn't recognize them as expired.

The control panel shows all cartridges as empty, but that's a small price to pay in exchange for being able to refil never expiring cartridges.

Re: HP Officejet Pro K5400 - ink expiration

Hey dd_uk,

My recommendation would be to replace the ink cartridges with genuine HP ink or contact HP support to service the product.
