HP Photosmart 5280 All-in-One: error message: Print cartridges: refer to printer documentation

I installed a new black ink print cartridge and now cannot clear an error message that says Refer to Printer documentation, with the orange exclamation point flashing. I tried removing and replacing the cartridge, unplugging the printer, and all the other low-tech suggestions, as well as HP's useless scan doctor utility. Nothing works. Any solutions out there? It's a Photosmart 5280 All-in-One. Thank you!
