HP Photosmart C5550 All-in-One won't align

Since we've owned our HP Photosmart C5550 All-in-One, we've never been able to get the cartridges to properly align.  We get an error message after completing the alignment process that says that the alignment failed.  Our color cartridge has never worked properly (wavy lines, or only some of the colors showing up) since the get-go.  The black has always worked.  Any suggestions?
