Hello Julia1213,
What specific model photosmart printer are you using? Each printer has different settings and different options available to you. So us knowing the exact model is going to help us direct you to the exact options that are available to you. Also since different software programs are available for the various computer operating systems knowing what OS you are using on your computer is going to help as well.

Hello Julia1213, I'm going to call attention to two settings that you can modify and include screenshots so you can see exactly what I'm talking about to ensure we have your printer set up properly.
The first thing we are are going to do is to check and set the qualilty level of the printouts This setting can be found by going into your printer preferences. (this will be the first screenshot)
There are three options:
Best - High quality printing usually done at a faster speed
Normal - Default settings
Draft - Low settings
To get the most pages per ink you would want to set to draft it will use less ink then the other two settings.
The next setting we want to look at is the color. You can choose to print in color or print in only black and white. If you are only printing texts and documents then printing in black and white is going to help ensure that you are not using unecessary color ink when you don't need to. By clicking the advance button in your printer preferences you are going to get a second screen (the second screenshot).
Output Quality should already be set to "Fast Draft" if we set the previous setting up to Draft already the section you want to look for is "Print in Grayscale." Change the setting there to "Black Ink Only." Do not use the High Quality setting as it uses color ink to "enhance" the black and will use considerably more ink than the other settings.
Let me know the outcome once you've set the two settings.
