Incompatible cartridge... out of the blue

My Phothosmart c4480 has always used only original HP cartrige, never refilled any, so right now I have installed several weeks ago a new 350xl expiring 12 - 11 bought from Amazon.it. No problem until this evening when the printer decided non to print due to "incompatible cartridges" problem. I removed the cartrige, being an XL on a rarely used printer it is almost full, reinstalled, no changes, still the message on the screen...

I searched the forum and found I could try to clean contacts, like we used to do before chips were added to cartrige to prevent user to use what they have payed the printer for, now the screen is saying "faulty or missing cartridge" (translating from italian...

Good thing is the important document I needed for tomorrow morning was printed, but I cannot access any option with this message and I don't want to trash a cartride that cost half of the printer price just because hp decided that no printing is better than losing to compatible cartridges... I'm extremely unpleased... 

I have already turned the printer off, unplugged, removed the cartridge and so on several times, I hope you have better solution than the ones I read arond: get another printer, not HP....

When the solution had been posted I had tryied a similar one several times as it had been posted on other question, and I had managed to get from incompatible to malfuncional cartridge, which at least let me print.

Today I finally did it all again, and somehow it did the trick. I'm still not pleased with HP way of forcing people and disable their printers, so it will not be my first choice next time I need to buy a printer.
