Photosmart 7960 printer - cartridge 57 vs 58?

Since the Photosmart 7960 printer has a black (56) cartridge, is it necessary to use a 58 cartridge at all? It would seem that 57 plus 56 could supply all the needed colors. As a practical matter why do I need cartridge 58?

Hi PVRalph,

 

All cartridge slots must be filled for the device to work. Depending on the colors you need you can set the printer to only print in grayscale/black only or limit those settings depending on the operating system on your PC.

Thank you for the response. I am aware that all cartridge slots must be filled, even if with an empty cartridge. My interest is in printing color, not grey scale. Has anyone tried to do this with just the 57 and 56 cartridges and gotten good repeatable results?
