I too was having the problem and Cartridge World told me chip might be not reading.  I removed all cartridges, unplugged printer,  replugged in printer and put cartridges back and the printer worked fine.  I am using all HP cartridges at the time.    NO MORE Grey scale looking print.

I got a C310a - Photosmart 7510. Had issue with printing black. At best, it will print one page ok after doing a cartridge clean. Called HP and went through some steps including pulling out the print head to clean. Still no go. The tech ordered a replacement print head to send to me. Tonight, I discover an option in the web management interface the "clean print head" option. That is not in the printer menu. I did that and the printer is printing black fine now. I tested printing 6 pages and all were ok. That web page even have level 2 print head clean if things still don't work out.

The problem is that the printer head is clogged:

1.) Open printer, remove ink cartridges

2.) Pull up the black lever on the right side of the ink cartridge housing

3.) Remove the printer head housing (what the ink cartridges were just sitting in)

4.) Turn the printer head housing upside down and look at the vertical slits on the bottom (these are the printer heads and must be cleaned)

5.) Using a lint free towell clean the vertical slits by sliding the towel back and forth along the long axis of the slits

6.) Re-insert printer head housing and depress the black lever to lock them in place once again

7.) Re-insert the ink-cartridges

8.) Go to printer settings (wrench icon in upper right of screen), then go to Tools, then go to Clean Cartridges (this will attempt to clean the cartridges and will print a test sheet when it is done)

9.) Repeat step 8 until you are getting a printed sheet with the alphabet printed in black several times along the left side of the paper and 6 colored bars at the bottom.  I had to run the Clean Cartridges function twice before it started working.

Your printer now prints black once again.

In my case, it didn't last long. I called HP and the support person took me through the steps of cleaning the print head. Still not good. HP had to send out a new print head. And that fixed the problem. I wasted ink and paper trying to fix this issue. The good thing is that the print head package came with a set of standard cartridges.

Was not impressed about a brand new printer having the problem but the problem was fixed.

My printer also wont print black. it will print colour but not black. I have bought a new black ink cartridge also and it still wont work. I tried the previous response to this post also. Can anyone help?

I bought a HP C310 printer a few years ago but just in the last 6months i have unpacked it and starting using it, it worked well no issues, just at the start of september, i noticed it was not printing black and yellow. I have done nurmerous test and spent close to $500.00 on replacing all the colours. Still nothing works, i have followed up on the advice on here, with cleaning the printer head, running the clean printer setting on the printer itself, no black or yellow. Its become a costly excerise itself.

would like some help with this problem soon as i think i might just chuck it out and just buy a canon brand or something. very disappointing as its still such a brand new printer.

You are a genious!  I had to take out the caseing twice because I cleaned only one side.  Remember that there are two sides that need to be cleaned!  You have saved me a trip to the store for a new printer, thank you!!
