So why is there a difference?
Something is seriously wrong. Full reset fixed the ink system error, and starting the printer in set up mode.
The OOB set up has caused the no load, flashing power button. This doesn't seem to be related to the printhead!
If you can't/won't help me any further then that is a real shame. You have been very patient but essentially I would rather spend my money with Epson or Canon and hope for better reliability than buy an HP service (pushing a few more buttons than I did already) or a new print head (I can't even install that since it isn't accessible).
If you did send me a pdf of the service manual or the firmware, and it worked then at least I would buy more ink!
Thanks for trying. I feel so sad that HP make such disposable printers. I've used the printer about 20 times over 18 months. That isn't very sustainable!
James

Hi James,
I have been away from a computer, sorry it took me so long to get back with you. The firmware is downloaded via the printer, and there is no service manual for this printer. The failure to load and flashing button is still an indication of a hardware failure. The OOBE reset is designed to reset the built in timer for the printer to broadcast a Network SSID to assist the customer in getting the printer connected via Automatic wireless setup method.
If you remove the power cable while the printer is powered on can you then move the printhead to the center, so that you can remove it?

Thanks for the clarification. I managed to get the printhead removed/reinstalled and the flashing has stopped, but I am still left with install/reinstall printhead message.
I have come to the conclusion that it probably is the printhead - some electrical problem caused by the 3rd party ink, rather than a mechanical issue caused by the ink itself.
If I do replace it, i'll be sure to report back here.
Thanks

So to update everybody...
I replaced the printhead with a new one and it didn't make any difference.
Does anyone have any ideas?? To recap - I had ink system failure, did full reset via service menu. Had HP welcome screen / setup. Message asking me to remove printhead and cartridges and reinstall. I do this but nothing happens. I switch off/power off/reset with the new print head installed, but same problem. Have also reset etc with no print head installed.
Before I throw this 18 month old printer i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶i̶n̶, m̶a̶i̶l̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶H̶P̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶u̶n̶p̶l̶e̶a̶s̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶i̶n̶s̶i̶d̶e̶, take to official recycling centre, can anyone suggest what to do?

Hi hpprinterfail,
Sorry to hear that the new printhead didn't resolve the issue. It appears that the remanufactured color cartridge you installed when this issue started did more damage to the printer then just the printer head. Check out the following link to find a new printer to fit your printing needs.
