Reconfigure 2050 to accept HP 61 cartridges

The 2050 we are using in Africa takes HP 122 cartridges. These weren't available in the USA so I purchased a bunch of HP 61 XL's assuming they would work (supposed to with the 2050). The HP 61's were rejected by the machine. Any way to make them work? Can the printer be reconfigured?
