Ever since I bought my printer, I have had problems installing the black ink cartridge. The spring on the right slips out of place and I get a message that I need to reinstall. Last time it took more than 50 tries. Now even 50 tries won't do it.

If the spring mount is damaged I have heard cases of folks fixing this by epoxying the spring back in its proper position. If the spring has punctured the tab circuitry as shown here then your product will require service as described in this post. At one time there was an extended warranty for this issue but that ended Dec 31, 2008.
