We purchased one black inkjet refill from Costco using the original HP cartridge. We installed it and tried to print. Received a message that said "refilled HP cartridge". Closed it. Printed one document and it shut down. Refused to print.
Cartridge carrier won't return to loading position so I can put in the HP cartridge I just took out. It's frozen. Won't turn off, won't turn on.
Called Tech Support twice and they said it's one year out of warrantee and it's a hardware failure. Can't be fixed. Nothing can be done but they would sell me an updated model at a discounted price.
This is the first time we've tried saving money with a refilled cartridge. No warning that we shouldn't use refilled cartridges.
Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act states that a warranty can't be voided by using alternative cartridge solutions. It seems that something in the software triggered a shutdown after the warranty expired.
We want the problem rectified or a new printer.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act has no standing since you are 1 year over the warranty period. HP did not void your warranty, your warranty has simply expired. I highly doubt that HP has a "kill switch" in the software designed to prevent non-HP cartridge use.
If you can show that the cartridge is defective you may be able to get Costco to do something for you but it is unreasonable to expect anything from HP. In fact HP was under no obligation to offer a discounted price for a new printer.
If you are unable to get the cartridge out you may just have to buy a new printer.
