Hey, did you see the one guy with the 6500 problem? He went through all the soaking procedures, and got the same results... no black printing. He bought a new printhead, but before he installed on the 4th day after the it he cleaned it, he tried the old printhead again and it worked. Apparently it needed to dry.
Another posting showed that he/she cleaned the printhead several times, not just once.
I think with all these problems, there ought to be a recall by HP. Think of all the money we're spending on ink and paper and new printheads, as well as all the time lost in trying to fix this. Mostly, we're without the use of a printer.
Wonder where I can file a complaint and whom. Better business bureau? I bought the printer at Staples. Perhaps they have a customer complaint number. They should not be selling these faulty printers. I wonder if the newer 7500 and 8500 are doing the same? Built in obsolescence?

I got my problem fixed for now. I took out the printer head and the ink cartiages out and sprayed the printer head with Engine starting fluid. The stuff you spray in the carb of a lawnmower to help it start. Then I blew it dry with my air hose at low volume. Note becareful you do not loose the little rubber pieces that fit over the nozzle. This was quicker than running it under water, because the starting fluid dried faster and evaporated. It took about a half hour and I was up and running again. Note you do not have to use a lot of fluid, and make you you dry everything out.
I agree HP Should do something about this problem. As it is a pain in the _ _ _.

I need to state that my black cartridge problem has been on my HP Photosmart Premium Model C309g.
The new 564XL cartridges are about 3/4 inch wide versa the old 564XL which are about 1 inch wide.
It appears that the placement of the new cartridges is critical. After installing my final new cartridge it again would not print even with the computer turned off and trying to copy on the printer. Finally, on the printer, I went to SETUP, selected TOOLS, and in the Tools menu I selected ALIGN PRINTER.
I received a message "Align Printer failed". So I carefully reinstalled the same black cartridge. The printer finally printed in black but some lines of print were squalled. So I ran ALIGN PRINTER procedure again with good results.
It was odd that the black would not print at all until I reinstalled the cartridge. It shows alignment is critical. I still can't explain why the old type cartridges would not work. But they will now if I plug them in.
Thanks for all of your comments

I have a Photosmart Premium C309a. This is the error message I have: "The following Ink Cartridge(s) appear to be missing or damaged. (A yellow circle) Refer to Printer Documentation."
I've replaced all of the cartridges. I've put old cartridges back in. I bought newer cartridges and inserted them. I've turned the printer off and on multiple times. I would like to clean and align the heads, but I cannot access any of the tools on the printer. I just have this message that won't go away.
This printer is less than 2 years old. I tried calling customer support. They want $25.00 to talk to me and suggested I purchase an upgrade to my printer. This printer is an upgrade to the previous printer we had issues with. I've spent over $100.00 in cartridges now.
I noticed that each set of replacement cartridges look somewhat different even though they have the same item number: 564XL.
Any suggestions?

Hi. I have an Adobe Reader File on my computer with the name "HP Photosmart Prem all-in-one c01856408.pdf". I assume it came with your printer's SW. Open that file and under "Solve a problem" select "Errors" Then select "Ink Cartridge and Printhead Messages" Under that are two areas as follows: (a) "Ink cartridge problem" and (b) "Ink cartridge is missing, incorrectly installed, or not intended for your product".
Generally they show how to test if your cartridge is installed correctly (physically), how to clean the contacts on each cartridge, how to remove the print head and clean the contacts on the head.
I was surprised to read how easy it is to remove the print head.
It appears I updated my software about three months ago. But, it does not look as it you have a SW problem.
Please let me know if any of the above helps,
Marv

Thanks for the feedback. No, I did not go to the software, and perhaps I should have. However, after 3 days of cleaning the printhead, the contacts, and being without a printer, I've taken the 6500 offline and replaced it with an older model castoff HP Officejet 5510. Tomorrow I'll put in the new cartridges in it and hope it still works.

I think I fixed the problem. I read in another feed to remove all cartridges, pull the power supply, wait 30 seconds, connect the power supply, wait for the missing cartridge message, replace cartridges. I then got message that other colors were missing or damaged. I kept removing and replacing until finally it said I was successful. Hopefully, I'm back in business.
