Thank you, Bob Headrick, for your reply. Unfortunately, by the time I got it, I had already purchased and installed a new printer of a different brand. The HP let me down at a critical time and I had no time to wait to discover possible solutions. However, I may bring the HP out of the recycyle bin in the garage and then try what you've suggested. It would be great if it actually could be resurrected!

I have a c8180 with the same error message. My printer has ALWAYS given me the improper shutdown message, even though I use the power button. Maybe the means that there has ALWAYS been a problem. Nonetheless, I never used to turn it off. Now I am receiving the same oxc error message, but all the help I see is for printers with number keys, etc. I have a touchscreen. Someone please help! This was not an inexpensive printer. This error began after I installed an out of date HP ink cartridge. I took it out and put in a brand new one after the printer gave me a warning that the cartridge had expired. But it has not been right since. As with the first post, I am having to shutdown every few hours now.

I have had the same problems with the C7280 printer. I call the tech support and was told that the printer head was defective and non replaceable. I was very up set to say the least. The printer was only two years old.
i believe that the 7280 was a very poor design and puts a hard ship on the consumer, yes HP offered to sell me and up grade for $200.00.
I was able to make a claim from my extended warranty company and they replaced the C7280 with an up grade a C410 series, so far so good.
I hope that there are not to many people that are having this problem.
thanks for your time.

Thanks! I tried this several times and obviously my 2 year old printer needs to be trashed. I just purchsed almost $100 worth of ink catridges and have been unable to use a drop of it. I will NOT be purchasing another HP!!!

My solution to my multiple errors on my C7280, which has rarely been used:
Symtoms were:
"ink system fail..." message
"Motor Stall..." message
"Paper Jam" once in a while message
and of course will cause the inproper shutdown message
I've read many forums on this subject and tried:
* Reset using the #,*,123 method
* Manually sliding the print head to check for blockage
* Sprayed WD-40 on the metal sliding rail
* checked for paper jam
* removed all the ink cartridges and replacing them when asked to insert cartridges
* Head cleaning while printer stillsometimes worked (intermitten), total fail at the end
NONE OF THE ABOVE WORKED FOR ME
What worked was a clue I got from one post, which was replacing the ink cartriges but NOT so gently pushing the cartridges in...
So, what I did was picked up the printer (unplugged) and dropped it onto the rugged floor about 2 feet off the ground. Really nothing to lose at that point.
To my surprise, it worked, and I found a small piece of paper, slightly smaller than the size of a hole punch hole...when I first power up the printer after the drop. When the print head initialized and slide to the center of the rail, it left the small piece of paper on the bottom which I can see perhaps from a previous paper jam where I had to pull the paper out and perhaps the paper got jammed.
After that, the printer worked 99% normal.
That 1% is if leave the printer on for too long (idle), it may still give the "Ink system fail..." message....but since it is 99% back to normal. Meaning, power-on and it can print right away (no error messages) is a good thing, and I can live with it for now.
Since HP printer business seems to be important to them, HP really should improve on the quality and listen to what people have to say about their products.
The reason I bought HP over other brands at the time was C7280 dual paper tray for 8x11 and photo paper...Plus, at the time the Wifi and dual side printing was a big plus. But it's competitor, now, seem to have better them as far as dual side printing, because the competitor can also do dual side scanning and dual side fax.

HP has all-in-one printers that can scan and fax both sides automatically. I have an older Officejet 7410 and a Photosmart 309a, both will automatically scan, copy or fax two sided documents.

I'm more confused than ever. I tried the solution you suggested without result but then I started playing with the menus offered. I did the 'print test' then 'nozzle test' and a perfect page printed. My happiness was short-lived because when I exited, the same "Ink System Failure" error appeared. Obviously the ink system works fine.
I have a C7280 which is a bit over 2 years old. This is the 3rd HP printer failure in a row:
#1 was a 3200 (I think that's right) that failed when I performed a cleaning of one of the ink contacts as directed in the help/troubleshooter offered by HP.
#2 a 7410 that one day decided it would not turn on -- ever again! No hints of any problems beforehand.
...and now this.
I've been an extremely loyal HP customer. I currently have 2 HP PC's (6330 and 6700), a monitor (w2207h), and another printer (h470). I can't even begin to list all the HP products I've owned. But this is my last purchase from them even though I'll be wasting a lot of unopened inks.

Hi claudiep, just to confirm - you have tried the reset, right?
Solution one: Reset the product
Without turning off the product, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.NOTE:The USB cable connects to the port on the back of the product. The port is labeled with the USB icon ().
Figure 1: Example USB connection (your product might not look exactly the same as this example) Remove the cartridges from the product. Wait for the 'Insert Cartridges ' message to display on the control panel. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product. Wait 60 seconds. Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button ().
Reinsert the cartridges, and then close any open doors on the product. If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so. Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product, and then try printing again.
